Delivering Change: Rebirth of the Paper Bag in a Digital World

by Jaime Radakovich | Posted in: Uncategorized

Technology, changing social norms, and Gen Z’s entrance into the marketplace impact consumer trends, customer expectations and purchasing preferences as we move toward an endemic approach to Covid 19.

What’s old is new

The plastic t-sack, known for its compact design, shiny surface, and easy-to-carry handles, has reigned king over the paper bag since its introduction in the early ’80s. As of late, the paper bag is back and brings a fresh outlook. Now available in a variety of styles and sizes and used across markets, consumers ranked paper bags highest for environmental attributes,[1] and Generation Z, along with Millennials, are most likely to base their purchasing decisions on brands values and principles (personal, social, and environmental.)[2]

Over the past decade, several states and municipalities passed legislation or imposed restrictions or fees on using the single-use plastic t-sack. This legislation, however, is not without controversy. Spurred by the COVID pandemic, the beginning of 2020 brought most current and pending bag bans and zero waste initiatives to a halt, with heated debates on whether the initiatives would ever return. Simultaneously, mobile ordering with in-store pickup and delivery options allowed companies to stay in business and consumers a safe way to order local goods. Grocery delivery jumped from 3.4% to 10.2% of the total market between 2019-2020. Online food ordering has been growing 300% faster than dine-in since 2014, with the pandemic years seeing nearly a doubled increase year over year.[3]

The rapid emergence of digitally based shopping apps and online services made available during the pandemic forever altered consumer behavior regarding preferred customer experiences, interactions, and expectations. However, this economic growth and technological advancements come at a cost, resulting in an influx of single-use waste associated with food packaging and plastic bags.[4]

A digital fallout

As consumers settle into a “new normal”, reinstated bag bans, green initiatives and sustainability are again thrust into the spotlight. However, this time, with the influence of a generation called Z. This new generation of digital nomads wants more than high-quality products, with 64% considering it essential that their employers act sustainably. Before purchasing, they seek a connection with companies and brands that share similar social values and sustainability goals. 54% of Gen Z will pay 10% more for a sustainable product, compared to 50% of Millennials, 34% of Gen X and just 23% of Baby Boomers. [5] It is becoming apparent that change is being demanded more now than ever, with 83% of those aged 44 and under willing to pay more for sustainable packaging.[6]

The Paper Bag in a Digital World

The food, delivery and grocery industry show no sign of slowing down. Mobile apps will see substantial growth again this year. Online grocery will account for 20.5% of overall sales by 2026.[7]

The entrance of younger generations, digital platforms, and sustainability trends are revolutionizing the market. Our response must be to rethink how to produce quality products that remain relevant and meet business needs and consumer demands.

The positive news, paper bags are eco-friendly and have seen significant innovation since their debut. Now available in various options, the paper bag is more than a commodity. As always, it holds, protects, and facilitates the transportation of goods. However, in a digital world, the paper bag remains one of the last tangible forms of brand communication welcomed in an overcrowded space, where attracting and retaining consumer loyalty is expensive, challenging and undergoing a slew of privacy battles.
